Esprit de Corpse

Semper Die, Book II

The dead are endless. The living are worse.

Sergeant Alex Slaughter, United States Marine Corps, thought fighting the infected was hard enough on land. Now he sails with the Salvation Armada, a desperate Naval flotilla carrying the last survivors of Washington, D.C.—men, women, and children who owe their lives to Alpha Squad’s final sacrifice.

The veteran NCO now commands Slaughter Squad, a hard-hitting Marine strike force tasked with raiding the shore and annihilating the undead so the civilians can eat, drink, and live another day. Every mission leaves more bodies in his wake—sometimes the enemy’s, sometimes his Marines.

But the true enemy isn’t just the dead. When a new America emerges from the old, war erupts in the Caribbean. The Marines of Guantanamo Bay, led by the ruthless Lt. Col. Nico, battle cartel remnants, smugglers, and warlords for dominance of the sea lanes. As Slaughter Squad takes brutal losses, the sergeant himself begins to fray. Each fight chips away at his humanity, and the hope that once kept him moving forward starts to bleed out.

Then comes the hardest realization of all: The greatest threat to the Armada’s survival may not be the zombies, the gangs, or even Lt. Col. Nico; It may be Slaughter himself.

What Other Authors Are Saying

“Jonathan Shuerger may be a newcomer to JF Holme’s Irregular Scout Team One universe, but he’s made a big splash with Semper Die!  His Marine background is obvious and the action is to die for.  If you want Band of Brothers meets Dawn of the Dead, this is the book for you!”

–Rick Partlow, author of Drop Trooper

“Jon Shuerger brings a new perspective to the zombie apocalypse… that of a United States Marine. While humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, a shrinking handful of warriors do what they can to stem the tide, no matter what the cost. It is the last mission many of them will ever see, fighting for loved ones who may already be lost.

Be sure to check it out, you won’t regret it.”

What Readers are Saying

I absolutely loved this book. The story is compelling and realistic. The characters are engaging and relatable. I loved how it brought back memories of my time in. The brotherhood that I miss more and more. Great read and can’t wait for the next. Thank you so much, outstanding job.

This book rocked. I love zombie stories – if they are well written and executed. This book met that criteria and more. It had both believable and likable characters along with pulse pounding action. Highly recommended for anyone who likes this genre.

Jonathan Shuerger outdoes himself in this one! I’ve been on-board with his stories since “The Exorcism of Frosty the Snowman,” and from a pacing and prose perspective this is Shuerger’s best work so far.
Though I am unfamiliar with the “Irregular Scout Team” series by J.F. Holmes, the universe of which this story is set in, I will say that this story has for me supplanted “World War Z” by Max Brooks as my favorite zombie book, and I’m certain a film adaptation could go toe-to-toe with “Battle: Los Angeles” in terms of “Oorah Marine Corps” energy.
The setting of a zombie apocalypse in a modern day really brings to light Shureger’s experience in the Corps, and the dialogue in this story is the most natural and believable dialogue I’ve read in a military story. His prowess at describing violence is practically made for the zombie genre, and as a Marine veteran myself I could see the personas of Marines I knew and loved amalgamated into the Devil Dogs of Alpha Squad.
