Armed with a spiraling, action-driven plot, wickedly entertaining characters and bloodthirsty prose, this ambitious novel hums with sinister intent. The immersive nature of the writing and the impossibly high stakes of the story make it impossible to put this book down in the middle of a chapter.

“Ashkelon’s entire existence is a demand for the God of Light to prove Himself. The story never delivers a trite, dialogue-packaged answer to this theological question. This isn’t “Christian Fiction” where the unbeliever must be answered in order to convert. Instead, the story allows it to be a difficult issue and wrestles with it.”

– Katie Roome, Periapsis Press

“Complicated mythology…graphic battle scenes…intriguing narrative. A blood-spattered fantasy that features several strong characters.”

What Readers are Saying

When the dark wings envelop humankind, a hero, dark as the monsters, is destined to be the only hope. The author has penned a first-rate novel with exceptional world-building, storytelling, vivid details, and unfeigned emotions.

I wanted to hate this book. I had a friend who begged me to read it, and I wasn’t in the mood to disappoint them, so I sat down and read this thing and…. yeah. I liked it. See those 5 stars? Yeah. This book earned it, even though I didn’t want it to. This. Book. Was…. Brutal. Filled with death. Pain. Loss. War. Some seriously well placed Biblical and mythical references (really enjoyed those). Some, ok lots, of blood and guts and chitin. And a really awesome…. anti-hero? I’m not sure what to call Ashkelon, but he was definitely my favorite character in this story, and the ending left me wondering what or who he actually is.

Shades of Black caught me by surprise. I’m not always a big “swords and sorcery” gal but every once in a while, an adventure will sweep me up in a rush of pages that I can’t put down till I know how it ends. Shuerger weaves a tale of a broken world with flawed people, plagued by some seriously sinister creeps and monsters. And things don’t always turn out how you’d expect. I can’t wait for book 2!
